Curriculum

Your child and the National Curriculum

The requirements of the National Curriculum are provided for in our curriculum planning, which is detailed and thorough, to ensure a balanced programme of study. The core subjects of Mathematics, Science, ICT and Literacy are taught, as are History, Geography, Technology, Music, Art, Physical Education, Citizenship and Religious Education.

Educational visits

Much work depends upon the children gaining first hand experience and to this end educational visits are arranged both locally, using the facilities of the immediate environment, or further afield. Older children are offered the opportunity to go on residential educational visits.

School Policies

Programmes of study are available to parents and the headteacher and staff are pleased to discuss these with  parents. Policy documents are regularly produced and reviewed and can be made available to interested parents, as can LEA policy documents. Parents are advised that there is a procedure which deals with the consideration of the complaints about the school curriculum, or related matters. The school also has a charges and remissions policy which makes clear what charges may be made for educational visits and activities. Some activities can only be funded by way of a voluntary contribution from parents. Information is available from school, although frequent mention of charging policy will be included in letters to parents.

Children are assessed at age 7 and age 11 in the formal end of Key Stage assessment.  Parents are able to discuss the results of testing with teachers and the results are reported to the L.E.A.

Secondary School

In recent years we have established excellent links with Handsworth Grange School, the comprehensive school to which most children transfer.   We co-operate with secondary colleagues to ensure a smooth transition from primary to secondary school. All children benefit from an induction programme which involves staff exchanges and familiarisation visits to Handsworth Grange School.

Religious Education

Religious Education (RE) in school is planned using the local, agreed syllabus. Parents are advised that they have the right to withdraw children from RE and worship at the school.

Further information

The school has a Personal, Social and Health Education programme.  Parents are informed when their child is engaged in work relating to Growth and Development. An opportunity to discuss the project with staff is offered to parents.

Educational Special Needs

Some children may encounter difficulties during their school life. When a teacher has a concern about any child the parents will be contacted and, working together, school and parents will decide what action needs to be taken. For example, this may involve individual programmes of work, paired reading or we may seek the additional help of outside agencies - support teacher, therapist or educational psychologist for example. We encourage all parents to contact their child's class teacher or the headteacher if they are concerned about any aspect of their child's education. Full details of the Special Educational Needs Policy are available from school.

All classes have regular games and P.E. lessons and opportunities are provided out of school hours for competitive football, swimming, rounders, netball etc.   Many extra-curricular activities are organised by staff. We feel that these greatly enrich school life for pupils who participate in them. Activities vary from term to term but include sports activities, music, drama, and fund-raising for charities.

Each year the Governors prepare a report for parents and organise an Annual Parents Meeting.
